Sommario

The experimental research presented in this contribution highlight the possibility to produce foamed concrete with density ranging from 1400 kg/m3 to 1800 kg/m3 to be considered in structural applications, thanks to compressive strengths higher than 25 Mpa. The lower structural weight suggests the idea of using this material in seismic areas, in order to exploit the benefits in relation to inertial forces. However, it is necessary to take into account the reduced elastic modulus compared to ordinary concrete of equal compressive strength. The contribution also shows how the seismic behavior of a reinforced concrete frame changes if the foamed concrete presented in this study is used instead of ordinary concrete of equal compressive strength. Specifically, there is an increase in the fundamental period of vibration by up to 30% and a decrease in the shear at the base of the most stressed concrete column by up to 29%.
