Sommario

Nowadays, civil engineers are often asked to face the issue of the seismic retrofit of existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures. Nevertheless, due to the large number of available techniques, the choice of the “best” retrofit solution becomes a mind-boggling challenge, usually solved through trial-and-error procedures. Consequently, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) can help find the “fittest” upgrading solution based on predefined optimization criteria, such as the economic and environmental sustainability of the upgrading interventions. In this context, the OpenSEES framework is adopted to perform several nonlinear static (pushover) analyses at each procedure iteration, as it allows the generation of different potential retrofit solution, parametrically derived from the adopted retrofit interventions (design variables) and the as-built existing structure. The work outlines the latest advances of a GA-based optimization procedure for seismic upgrading, combining FRP jacketing with steel braces, intended as a guidance for practitioners in solving this timely challenge.
