Sommario

Among the prevalent construction systems currently employed, modular construction stands out for several core characteristics: the possibility of structural component reuse, construction cost reduction, reduced design and construction time. Furthermore, a modular system must be designed to guarantee specific performances across different scenarios.

Existing literature extensively addresses modular constructions, predominantly focusing on technical solutions concerning its structural, architectural, and environmental aspects. However, a gap in the literature pertains to design methods for modular constructions that permit maximizing the number of scenarios in which they guarantees their core characteristics and specific performances (working scenarios). As an example, from a structural engineering perspective, the question is: which are the optimum characteristics of structural elements that permit maximizing the number of working scenarios?

In this paper, a deisgn methodology for modular structural systems, that aims to achieve this goal is proposed. This mainly focuses on their seismic performance with reference to the entire Italian territory. Moreover, a case study of a Polish station is taken into account for the application of this procedure, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology in maximizing the working scenarios.
