VISIT-X7: post-earthquake technical triage for strategic transport infrastructures

Sommario
In the framework of technical activities following a seismic event—aimed at overcoming the emergency phase—it is crucial to rapidly identify strategic transport infrastructures requiring further specialist investigation. This paper presents an advanced application of the VISIT methodology (Visual Inspection for Safety-deficit Identification and Triage), designed to operate in peacetime conditions. VISIT enables post-earthquake inspections through a structured triage process, supported by technologies that enhance visual assessment. The approach is analogous to a hospital emergency room: the inspector conducts an initial evaluation to assign priority codes, which are then followed up by specialized technical assessments. The paper introduces three innovative operational kits developed to enable this function in an autonomous and standardized manner: (1) a kit with technical clothing and personal protective equipment; (2) a logistics kit ensuring autonomy for up to seven days; (3) a technical inspection kit, including rugged devices, high-resolution cameras, thermal sensors, telescopic tools, drones, and data processing software. The goal is to support the post-earthquake decision-making process with practical tools, outside the emergency context, contributing to a qualified, traceable, and replicable technical response.
