The use of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) members as bracing elements is still relatively uncommon, but it is gaining increasing attention in the field of sustainable construction. LVL members offer excellent mechanical performance, both in tension and compression, and structural responses can be achieved even with extremely reduced cross-sectional dimensions.
The integration of seismic dampers at the end connections may also enhance the seismic response significantly. This approach enables damage localization within a fuse element, leading to a low-damage seismic performance.
This study aims at exploring the use of LVL members as bracing elements within steel or reinforced concrete framed structures. Various connection types are explored to ensure effective force transfer between damper and timber member. The connection of seismic damper to the small cross-section LVL member represents a design challenge.
The adoption of timber bracing offers a sustainable and cost-effective solution for seismic protection, while providing aesthetic benefits and reducing environmental impact without compromising structural safety.
