Romania is one of the countries in Europe having a high seismic hazard. Its buildings stock is now quite old (more than 50 years), since it was massively developed during the communist period. Many buildings are vulnerable to the seismic action, and the authorities and population try to make steps towards strengthening and retrofitting them. 

Although the process is slow, also due to the fact that the last strong earthquake was 45 years ago and people tend to forget about it, efforts are being made to increase the seismic safety for the important buildings. 

Usually, due to economic reasons, the conventional strengthening solutions are applied. However, sometimes the owner imposes that the functionality of the building is not to be interrupted or sometimes the conventional solutions simply do not work.

Thus, modern solutions, such as seismic isolation, were also embraced and applied for several existing buildings, most of them being heritage. The paper presents briefly the state of the art of the seismically isolated buildings in Romania, with a special focus on the most recent one, the National Museum of Firefighting in Bucharest "Foisorul de foc".
