The Italian heritage of bridges and viaducts is very dated. Except for the historical bridges of pre-industrial origin, most of the bridges and viaducts were built before 1982, with a very high percentage after the secon world war. The intrinsic structural fragility is therefore evident, which is complex to stem above all by local authorities. Currently, the managers are required to plan the maintenance of bridges and viaducts according to the current regulatory framework, but due to a shortage of personnel and reduced availability of funds, this objective requires the identification of adequate strategies. With the issuance of the "Guidelines for the classification and management of risk, the evaluation of safety and the monitoring of existing bridges" by the Superior Council of Public Works, a new multilevel approach was introduced for the definition of the actions to be applied on individual bridges, based on risk and attention classes. In this scientific work the case of the Municipality of Rome will be illustrated, deepening the current bridge management system already implemented, the comparison (benchmark) with the other realities of road and motorway infrastructures and finally a "gap analysis" will be proposed between the current monitoring and classification system and that expected by the new bridge guidelines.
